KUALA LUMPUR:
A total of 32 motorists here yesterday found out just how expensive it is to not wear seatbelts.
They were issued summonses at Jalan Ampang in a Road Transport Department (RTD) operation, held together with City Hall traffic enforcement personnel, traffic police and Road Safety Department.
During the two-hour operation, officers also handed out car stickers stating: "Buckle up for your own safety" as a reminder to motorists not to neglect their safety.
"We are stepping up efforts to create awareness among the public to buckle up by issuing summonses now," said Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh.
"Motorists think airbags alone will be adequate protection. They fail to realize, especially for older vehicles, the airbags only work when the seat belt is used.
"Let’s not be irresponsible drivers. Please buckle up for our own safety and others."
Suret said such operations would be conducted nationwide from now to ensure motorists buckle up.
