Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, President of the Russian Republic of Kalmykia and President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), has filed a defamation lawsuit against the world’s 12th chess champion Anatoly Karpov. In an interview for the Gazeta.ru online newspaper, Ilyumzhinov explained that Karpov’s statements were discrediting FIDE’s activities. Karpov must provide evidence of corruption in FIDE to the Ethics Commission or face punishment, Ilyumzhinov said. Karpov is preparing to run for FIDE President along with Ilyumzhinov. The election is due to be held during a World Chess Olympics in Khanty-Mansiysk.
