SOLO (Indonesia), 19 DECEMBER, 2011: Malaysia finished in third place in the 6th Asean Para Games which concluded here today after capturing 51 gold, 35 silver and 42 bronze overall. Of the nine gold medals won by the national contingent today, three came in tenpin bowling, two in athletics, two in badminton and one each in swimming and powerlifting. Thailand were overall champions after capturing 115 gold, 94 silver and 71 bronze while hosts Indonesia were runners-up with 107 gold, 99 silver and 83 bronze. The gold medals in tenpin bowling were contributed by Wong Kee Soon and Abu Bakar in the doubles and the trios of Ku Izhan Ku Harun, Choo Kan Chai and Azli Pinang and Badrul Rahman, Wong Kee Soon and Zahidi Lamsah. In athletics, the gold were won by the men's 4x 400m quartet of Mohd Raduan Emari, Krishna Kumar Haridas, Nelson Sevilian and Amir Firdaus Jamaluddin as well as Davis Machang in the men's javelin. Madzlan Saibon and Cheh Liek Hou contributed the gold medals in men's wheelchair badminton while powerlifter Mohd Shahmil Md Saad also delivered in the men's above 100kg category. Mohd Shahmil's lift of 187kg also rewrote the old record of 161.75kg set by Thailand's Jaithon Opas at the 2009 edition of the Games in Kuala Lumpur. The other gold for Malaysia today was supplied by Fraidden Dawan in the men's S10 (visually impaired) 200m backstroke. |
