LONDON CHESS CLASSIC
December 20,2009
By Luke McShane
THE London Chess Classic was the strongest tournament to take place in the capital for a quarter of a century.
The unofficial world number one going into the event, 19-year-old Magnus Carlsen got off to a great start by beating his main competitor Vladimir Kramnik in the first round.
Carlsen notched up further wins against me and the Chinese player Ni Hua to take first place in the event, and secures his place at the top of the next ranking list.
Kramnik also scored three wins, but was unable to catch up with Magnus and took clear second place.
I started well by defeating Nigel Short in an eight hour 163 move marathon game, which must be my longest game ever.
But it was Michael Adams and David Howell who came top amongst the four English players. Both scored one win and six draws.
A poor finish saw me finishing fifth, but I was delighted to receive the best game prize of the tournament for my victory over the American champion Hikaru Nakamura.
Interestingly, the tournament used a football style scoring system of three points for a win and one for a draw.
So the final standings were Carlsen 13, Kramnik 12, Howell and Adams 9, McShane 7, Ni Hua and Nakamura 6 and Nigel Short 5.
The event was expertly organised by Malcolm Pein, and every single game was fought to the end.
That made an excellent spectacle for the many visitors who watched in the often overflowing auditorium and packed the commentary room each day at the Kensington Olympia.
More than a million people followed the event online, and 2500 attended the event, including a dozen schools from as far afield as North Wales.
Additionally, the Chess in Schools and Communities charity has been set up to bring the game to a wider audience in the future.
There are plans afoot for a sequel next year, and even the possibility of the 2012 Fide World Championship coming to London.

(London, 2009)
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Be2 0–0 6.Nf3 e5 7.0–0 Na6 8.Be3 Ng4 9.Bg5 Qe8 10.c5 exd4 11.Nd5 Be6!? A few years ago I lost a couple of games in this sharp variation of the King's Indian, so I wanted to try out this rare move which I hoped would bring more success. 12.Be7 Bxd5 13.Bxf8 Qxf8 13...Kxf8!? was worth serious consideration.
After 14.exd5 Nxc5 15.Nxd4 Ne3! (I hadn't seen this possibility) 16.Ne6+!? Qxe6 17.dxe6 Nxd1 18.Rfxd1 fxe6 and Black has the easier game. 14.exd5 dxc5 15.Qb3 Rb8 A very tense position has arisen. Two pawns for the exchange is enough compensation on paper, but White has time to develop some initiative and the knight on a6 is looking silly.
I hoped that I would find time to round up the d5 pawn before he created counterplay. 16.Rfe1 Qd6 16...b5 was one of my key ideas over the next few moves, but it doesn't quite work here. 17.Bxb5 c6 18.dxc6 Nc7 19.a4 a6! was the idea, winning material, but White could play 18.Qa4! instead. 17.h3 Nf6 18.Bxa6 I was slightly relieved to see this. 18.a3 was critical, calmly locking out the knight on a6.
During the game I was frantically trying to calculate the consequences of 18...b5?! (18...Bh6! looks much more prudent, taking control of g5 and c1) 19.Bxb5 c6 20.dxc6 Nc7 21.a4 a6 22.Ne5 Qf8! (22...axb5 23.Qxf7+ Kh8 24.axb5 looked terribly dangerous, and later my computer confirmed my hunch that Black is losing here) 23.Nd7 Nxd7 24.cxd7 and I was struggling to fathom this position from a distance - Black is probably doing at least okay after 24...Qd8! (but not 24...axb5 25.axb5 Nxb5? 26.Qxb5! Rxb5 27.Ra8!! Qxa8 28.Re8+ Qxe8 29.dxe8Q+ Bf8 30.Qxb5 and White wins!).
18...Qxa6 19.Rac1 19.Ne5 Qd6 20.Nc6? looks tricky but runs into a counterpunch: 20...c4! 21.Qb5 a6! and White loses material. 19...Bf8 20.Ne5 Qb6?! If I had seen the possibility of 21.d6 I might have prevented it altogether. 20...Bd6 21.Qf3 Bxe5 22.Rxe5 Qd6 looks quite promising for Black. 21.Qf3?! Creating dangerous threats on the kingside (including the immediate threat of Nxf7 followed by Re1–e6), but this is very double-edged.
21.d6! was not a move I had noticed. 21...Qxb3 22.dxc7! That's the point. 22...Rc8 23.axb3 Nd5!? When Black will pick up the c7 pawn with a balanced game. 21...Qd6 22.g4 There's no time to waste, as I was threatening Kg8-g7 followed by Qd6xd5. 22...Bh6 23.Rc2 Re8!
Deflecting White's rook from the c-file. 23...Rf8 24.Nd3 b6 25.b4! was annoying, as 25...cxb4 is met by 26.Rc6! winning the knight on f6. 24.Rce2 Rf8 Covering f7 to prepare the capture on d5. 25.Nc4 25.Rc2!? was worth considering, for a surprising reason.
After 25...Nxd5 26.Nc4 Qd8 27.Na5! White regains a pawn due to a pretty knight maneouvre: 27...b6? 28.Nc6 Qd6 29.Qxd5! Qxd5 30.Ne7+ Kg7 31.Nxd5. 25...Qxd5 A triumph - finally the pawn drops off! 26.Qxf6 Bg7! An important intermezzo. After 26...Qxc4 27.Re8 White seeks counterplay by Qf6-d8 followed by Re8xf8 and Re1–e8. 27...Qd5 28.Rxf8+ Bxf8 29.Re8 threatens Qf6-e7, and after 29...Qd6 30.Qxd6 cxd6 31.Ra8 the pawn harvest begins. 27.Qh4?! 27.Qf4 Qxc4 28.Re8 was better, I thought.
From f4 the c7 pawn comes under attack and the d-pawn is temporarily pinned. 28...Qd5 29.Qxc7 d3 should still be promising for Black. 27...Qxc4 28.Re8 Qd5 29.Rxf8+ Bxf8 30.Re8 Kg7 31.g5 Or 31.Qd8 Qxd8 32.Rxd8 a5. In the very worst case I saw that Bf8-d6 and b7-b6 would protect all the pawns, so all the winning chances are with Black. 31...Qd6 32.Kf1 32.Qh6+ Kg8 just leads to a dead end. 32...b5 The game of Space Invaders begins. 33.Ke1 c4 34.Qe4 c5 35.h4!?
With the clock running down, I thought this was connected with the obscure idea of h4-h5 and f2-f4-f5-f6+, but the simpler idea is Qe4-f3-f6+. The immediate 35.Qf3 was well met by Be7, hitting the g5 pawn. 35.f4!? preparing to recapture on e5 with the pawn, was also interesting. 35...c3 36.bxc3 dxc3 37.Qe5+ Qxe5+ 38.Rxe5 a5 39.Kd1 39.Re8 a4 40.Ra8 might have been tougher but neither side had much time to think before move forty. 39...a4 40.a3!? b4 41.Kc2 Having made the time control I had a very long think. 41...f5 and 41...h5 both came to mind, but I settled on 41...h6!
Softening up the g5 square gives the bishop more scope sometimes, but this move comes with a more subtle idea as well. 42.Rd5? (see diagram 1) Apparently the losing move. 42.Re8 was better, and then I couldn't see a win for Black. 42...hxg5 43.hxg5 Bd6 44.Ra8 b3+ 45.Kxc3 Be5+ 46.Kd2 (46.Kd3? c4+! 47.Kxc4 b2 wins as b8 is covered by the bishop) 46...c4 47.Rxa4 c3+ 48.Kc1 Bd6 49.Kb1 and now White threatens Ra4-c4, so Black has to take a draw with 49...c2+ 50.Kb2 Be5+ 51.Kc1 Bd6 when neither side can make progress.
42...hxg5 43.hxg5 Kh7! The hidden idea behind 41...h6! 44.Rd7?! 44.axb4 cxb4 45.Rb5 keeps chances alive for White by forestalling Bf8-g7, but the pawns are very strong.(45.Ra5? meets with a pretty refutation though: 45...b3+ 46.Kxc3 Bb4+! 47.Kxb4 b2 and the pawn promotes) 44...Bg7! 45.Rxf7 b3+ 46.Kb1 46.Kc1 Kg8 47.Ra7 Bd4 48.Rxa4 Kf7! is winning in the same way as the game. 46...Kg8
The knowledge that any slip could even mean losing the game kept me on my toes. The other idea I looked at was 46...c4?? 47.Ra7 c2+ 48.Kc1 c3 49.Rxa4 Bf8 and I thought that with the rook tied down I could play Bf8x-c5xf2, and eventually threaten mate on both a3 and e3. Unfortunately, 50.Rb4! and after 50...Bxb4 51.axb4 there isn't time to catch the nimble passed pawn. 47.Ra7 Bd4! 48.Rxa4 Kf7! With the support of the king one of the pawns can be forced home. 48...Bxf2 was too slow.
After 49.Rc4! Black is in serious danger, but may be able to salvage a draw with 49...Bd4 50.a4 c2+ (50...Kf7? 51.a5 Ke6 52.a6 Kd5 53.Rxd4+ and White promotes in time) 51.Kc1 Be3+ 52.Kb2 Bd2! 53.Rxc5 Kf7 54.a5 c1=Q+ 55.Rxc1 Bxa5 56.Kxb3 Bd2 and the weak g5 pawn makes it hard to progress. 49.Ra6 49.Rxd4 cxd4 50.a4 d3 and the king can't hold up all three pawns any more. 49...Be5! Preparing c3-c2+ and Be5-f4+ so the rook must retreat. 50.Ra4 Ke6 51.Rh4 Kd5 52.a4 c4 53.Rh1 c2+ 54.Kc1 c3 55.Rh4 Bd6 (see diagram 2) A pretty finish. Mate follows on a3.

HARAPAN CATUR 2010/2011
Kejohanan Catur OKU Hari Wilayah 2010
2. Kejohanan Perseorangan SBM 2010. 3. Kejohanan Catur OKU MBPJ 2010. 4. Kojohanan catur KL Braille,5. Kejohanan Jemputan MCBM 2010 6. 2nd. Asia Blind 7. OKU Jemputan Asia.
SBM TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP 2009
Society of Blind in Malaysia headed by President Mah Hassan Hj Omar and Sports Coordinator, Rosham Sidek had their hands full organising the annual SBM Chess Championship and this year is the team event, which attracted 24 players in eight teams from Sarawak and West Malaysia.
It was a 5 Rounds SWISS over two days at the Jati Minda Hall in Setapak, almost all the top Blind players were there Mah Hassan Hj. Omar, Nur Fiqhua Halil, Shaharuddin Mappa, mat Idris Saman, Mahadir Ghani, Moira Mukri and many more top blind players, it was interesting to see a fighting team championship. It should be noted that all SBM Blind Championship will be recognised as a basis for selection of 2010 Blind chess players from now on.
The champion Team : 1. KL Braille : Mah Hassan Hj Omar, Saharuddin Mappa and Nur Fiqhua Halil.
2. Mat Idris saman, Mahadir Ghani and Amir Shamsuddin from KL/Selangor A Team while the KL/Selangor b team got third place.

AN UNSUNG INTERNET HEROINE
She was just a housewife with two kids who sent an email to friends complaining about treatment and wrong diagnosis while seeking treatment at a private hospital but got caught in a system that backfire that lead her to be arrested, jailed, fined and sued but Facebook saved her.
A coin fund to help her collected 600 million Rupiah from the public through coins and notes collection throughout Indonesia.
PRITA MULYASARI you are not alone.
Sifu have been following this case of AMICUS CURIAE for Prita and admired this lady for her courage and for people's power behind her and want Malaysia to share this new hope for the people by an unsung heroine.
Have listed a few sites to understand this beautiful heroine.

NZ Trained Prodigy is World Chess Champion
Bobby Cheng, 12, beat a field of 142 players from 68 countries to win the title at the World Age Chess Championship in Antalya on Sunday.
Cheng's coach, Australian grandmaster Darryl Johansen, told the Australian Associated Press he was "over the moon" at the result as Australians were generally regarded as minnows in the chess world.
The chess prodigy, who is in Year 7 at Balwyn High School, faced stiff competition, with 15 of his opponents being previous master titles winners, some of whom had left school to pursue the game full time.
In the final round, Cheng demolished the competition favourite and top seed from India, Suri Vaibhav, and held off challenges from competitors from Poland, Canada and Russia.

GERAK GEMPUR CATUR SEBAGAI SUKAN UTAMA DI SEKOLAH! MARI RAKAN BLOGGER SEKALIAN!
Assalamualaikum..

Diabetes tandingi kanser
Oleh HAMZAH ABDUL HAMID
Semalam, Hari Diabetes Sedunia disambut. Adakah kita memahami mesejnya?
KEGEMUKAN menjadi punca utama rintangan insulin.

– Utusan/Shaifudin Mohd. Nor
KUALA LUMPUR 19 Nov.

''Sukan Paralimpiad juga sama penting dengan sukan besar lain yang dianjurkan di dalam negara ini. sebelum ini masyarakat tidak memberi perhatian mengenai kejohanan ini," kata Menteri Belia dan Sukan dalam sidang media selepas merasmikan Sukan Paralimpiad ke-14;
Petikan dari Utusan Malaysia;

MAKE SPORTS A WAY OF LIFE OR MAKE CHESS AS SPORTS FIRST
Sports is part of the Russian culture and it is only natural to see the dominance of Russia in all form of sports.
Quoting her, who believes that the only way to succeed at top-level is by embracing sports as a way of life, that is why Russia is able to produce endless great players in all field of sports.
Sifu have had the opportunity to study and understand this very system when sifu was in USSR(before the break up)at the School of Pioneers in Moscow and Schuimi University of Sports way back but MALAYSIA is something different, it never have or will ever have any workable plans unlike working with MPM and MSN to plan for the paralimpic athlets with its ten years plan and it work successfully with the eight Golds in the last 5th. Asean Paragames.
Unless and until Malaysia start working with MSN our players could just dream and hope for miracles and hope that chess be accepted as sports first before even thinking and hoping for chess to be a way of life.
For those inspiring youngsters do not make and repeat the last 30 years of mistakes but dream you must but make changes or we might be way off and backward compared to Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam or even Nyanmar.
SENDIRIAN
Setelah kesekian lama berlayar mengharungi samudera hayat
Menghitung
Bekas dan jejak yang pernah ku tinggalkan
Aku bertanya sendirian
Apakah bekalan perlu ku bawa
Dan berapa amalan telah ku himpun
Persiapan bakal di bawa pulang
Menuju ke garis akhir
Ah!!!...
Usia pun berlalu sederas deru taufan
Sepantas kilat menyambar
Dan di suatu ketika
Pelabuhan ini akan kutinggalkan
Sahabat-handai, rakan-taulan
Sanak-saudara, kekasih-tercinta
Adalah ikatan longgar yang bakal usai
Pasti ku tinggalkan
Dan yang ada kini; cuma diriku sendiri
Kian terasing terpisah
Melewati dan meninggalkan
Hari-hari silam
Penuh kesendirian

SIFU IS BACK
Thanks to all friends for the well wishes and visits while Sifu was at GHKL for the last 10 days. The stroke was something unexpected but sifu was tired and the Hari Raya Season had all the fantastic food so the bitter leason of not controlling the temptations of good food.
My thanks to my fantastic family who gave all the support and looking after sifu doing the critical times and all the doctors and nurses from Polyclinic Brickfiels, Tanglin Hospital and Wad 18. 19 and 21 of GHKL.
What is stroke?
A stroke is the rapidly developing loss of brain function(s) due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. This can be due to ischemia (lack of blood supply) caused by thrombosis or embolism or due to a hemorrhage. As a result, the affected area of the brain is unable to function, leading to inability to move one or more limbs on one side of the body, inability to understand or formulate speech, or inability to see one side of the visual field
Diabetic Diet Advice - Points to Remember
What, when, and how much you eat all affect your blood glucose level. You can keep your blood glucose at a healthy level if you:
Eat about the same amount of food each day.
Eat at about the same times each day.
Take your medicines at the same times each day.
Exercise at the same times each day.
Every day, choose foods from these food groups: starches, vegetables, fruit, meat and meat substitutes, and milk and yogurt. How much of each depends on how many calories you need a day.
Limit the amounts of fats and sweets you eat each day.
Sifu had a stroke and now recovering dan bersyukur kepada Allah atas keselamatan dan recovery sifu.

Some Chess Opening Tricks
Many of the best openings tricks focus on the squares f2 and f7 so if you want to avoid being tricked, these are the squares you should pay the most attention to. Most of the tricks on this page make use of standard tactical themes but there are a few unusual ideas. I hope that these devious opening lines serve you well.
* The Fried Liver Attack
This is a classic and runs as follows.
1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bc4 Nf6, 4. Ng5 d5, 5. ed NxP?!, 6. Nxf7!? KxN,
7. Qf3+ Ke6, 8. Nc3.
The position is unclear after 8. ... Nb4. However, white can improve with the
line 6. d4 ed, 7. 0-0 when he threatens 8. Nxf7 and is probably winning.
* From's Gambit
Bird's opening is rarely played but the clever gambit with e5 is worth
knowing as it is a very playable and tricky response. After
1. f4 black plays 1. ... e5?! with the idea of 2. fe d6, 3. ed Bxd6,
threatening Qh4+ winning. After 4. Nf3 (other moves lose) Black replies with
4. ... Bg4, with the threat of BxN and then Qh4+ winning. Although white can
escape with 5. e3, (or 5. e4, [other moves are inferior and most lose]),
black's position is fun to play and probably only slightly worse. White has to
play accurately on moves 4 and 5 and in blitz games this gambit is definitely
worth a go.
* The Staunton Gambit
This is in some sense similar to From's gambit running as it does 1. d4 f5,
2. e4 fe. Now the move 3. Nc3 has the idea of 3. ... d5?, 4. Qh5+ g6, 5. Qxd5
(and if 5. ... Qxd5, 6. Nxd5 Kd8, 7. Bf4 black has no good way to defend the
c7 pawn) when white is clearly better. If black plays 3. ... Nf6, then white
can play 4. Bg5 with the idea that if 4. ... d5?, then 5. BxN ef, (Not 5. ...
gf, 6. Qh5+-) 6. Qh5+ g6, 7. Qxd5 QxQ, 8. NxQ when white wins the f6 pawn and
has a winning advantage. If black plays the correct 4. ... Nc6 then after
5. BxN ef, (not 5. ... gf, 6. Qh5#) white should avoid the immediate
6. Nxe4 because black can play 6. ... Qe7 winning material after for example
7. Qe2 Nxd4, 8. Qd3 Qb4+ etc. Better therefore is 6. d5 Ne5, 7. Nxe4 with an
equal position.
* A pretty trap
There is a very pretty but rare trap which runs as follows. 1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3
d6, 3. Bc4 Bg4, 4. Nc3 g6?, 5. Nxe5! BxQ, 6. Bxf7 Ke7, 7. Nd5#
* Owen's Defence
This is a system which is rarely played which runs 1. e4 b6, 2. d4 Bb7. After
3. Bd3 the 'original' move was 3. ... f5, with the idea that if white plays
4. ef then black wins the rook on h1 with 4. ... Bxg2. However, this is
tactically flawed: 5. Qh5 g6, 6. fg Nf6, 7. gh+! NxQ, 8. Bg6#.
In fact black can improve with 6. ... Bg7 but white still gets a winning
position after 7. gh+ Kf8 8. Nf3! Nf6, 9. Qg6! BxN, (9. ... BxR, 10. Bh6! RxP,
11. Ng5 winning) 10. Rg1! RxP, 11. Qg3! Be4! 12. BxB NxB, 13. Qf3+ Kg8 14. QxN
+- and white can continue his attack with Bf4-e5 etc.
* The Budapest
There is an odd variation of the Budapest which runs 1. d4 Nf6, 2. c4 e5,
3. de Ne4?!, 4. Nf3 d6?!, 5. ed Bxd6, 6. g3?? (Oh dear!) 6. ... Nxf2! 7. Kxf2
(7. Qa4 Bd7, doesn't help white) 7. ... Bxg3+ and black wins the white queen
on d1.
The sequence 1. d4 Nf6, 2. Nd2 e5, is a lot like the true Budapest and the
continuation 3. dxe5 Ng4, 4. h3 Ne3, winning, illustrates a theme which comes
up in other positions. If 5. fe then of course 5. ... Qh4 6. g3 Qxg3# and if
white doesn't take the knight then he loses his queen.
* The Modern Defence
A similar queen trap is seen after the moves 1. e4 g6, 2. d4 Bg7, 3. Nf3 d6,
4. Bc4 Nd7??, when white wins with 5. Bxf7! If black takes it with 5. ...
KxB?? (which looks superficially correct) then after 6. Ng5 he faces an
unpleasant choice. If Kf6 then Qf3#, if Qf8 then Ne6+ wins black's queen, and
if Ke8 then Ne6 still wins black's queen!
* The Chameleon Variation of the Sicilian Defence
Another trick which makes use of this trapping pattern, but to even greater
effect, occurs in an unusual line of the Chameleon variation of the Sicilian.
1. e4 c5, 2. Nc3 Nc6, 3. Ne2 (This is quite a sneaky move; white waits for
black to commit himself to a particular set–up before deciding whether to play
an open or a closed Sicilian.) 3. … Nf6, 4. d4 (This is probably the wrong
decision. White should play a closed Sicilian here with 4. g3.) 4. … e6, (4.
... cd 5. Nxd4 would of course transpose to a main line classical Sicilian)
5. d5 ed, 6. ed Ne5, 7. g3?? (7. Nf4 is better, and quite interesting)
7. ... Nf3#. Quite a shock!
* The Caro Kann Defence
After the standard 1. e4 c6, 2. d4 d5, 3. Nc3 de, 4. NxP Nd7, White can find
out whether Black is paying attention by playing 5. Qe2. If Black plays the
normal looking 5. ... Ngf6??, then White wins instantly with 6. Nd6#. This has
caught out a lot of people in early morning games!
* The Traxler Counter Attack
This is one of the most outrageous openings. It runs as follows; 1. e4 e5,
2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bc4 Nf6, (the two knights defence which you should recognise
from an earlier trick), 4. Ng5 Bc5!?. Black completely ignores the threats
against f7! The idea is that after 5. Nxf7 Bxf2!?, 6. KxB Nxe4+ whites king
will be in more danger than black's. There have been quite a few monographs
written on this system and some of the complications are barely
comprehensible. Basically black can bring his queen to h4 and will threaten
all sorts of terrible things against white's king.
* The Albin Counter Gambit
Another well known trap runs as follows. 1. d4 d5, 2. c4 e5, 3. de d4,
4. e3? (4. a3 is better) 4. ... Bb4+, 5. Bd2 dxe3, 6. Bxb4? (6. Qa4+ is possible although the complications that arise after 6. ... Nc6, 7. Bxb4 [7. fe Qh4+, 8. Kd1 {Not 8. g3? Qe4!} 8. ... Qf2! is better for black] 8. ... ef+, 9. KxP Qd4+ probably favour black, especially over the board.) 6. ... ef+ 7. Ke2 fxg1=N+!!, 8. RxN Bg4+ and Black wins white's queen on d1.
* The English Defence
Some players, when faced with the English defence, try to steer the game into calmer waters. The sequence 1. c4 b6,2. Nc3 Bb7, 3. e4 e6, 4. Nf3 Bb4 5. Qb3 is not uncommon. Black may set a trap here with 5. ... Na6, 6. a3 Nc5! when 7. QxB? loses the queen to 7. ... a5!, 8. Qb5 c6!. 7. Qc2 is better but doesn't promise white much. Note that black doesn't (immediately) win a pawn after 7. ... BxN 8. QxB Nxe4 because white can play 9. Qxg7 and after 9. ... Qf6, though the position is probably slightly better for black. Things would be different if white could find a way to play Bh6! (i.e. by having moved his d pawn earlier).
* The Queen's Gambit
A bad line which inexperienced players with the black pieces play time again is the following: 1. d4 d5, 2. c4 dc, 3. e3 b5?!, (3. ... e5, is better) 4. a4 c6?!, (dubious because black cannot safely retain his pawn this way) 5. ab cb??, 6. Qf3! which wins at least a knight. Black's best move here (to save the rook on a8) is 6. ... Nc6, and after 7. QxN Bd7, white can retreat his queen and will be simply a knight up for nothing.
* The Grob
The 'Grob gambit' loses after 1. g4 e5, 2. f4?? Qh4#. The virtually identical 1. g4 e5, 2. f3?? Qh4# is known as fool's mate.
* The Fred
This (gambit) is dubious. 1. e4 f5?!, 2. ef Nf6, 3. Bg5 (threatening BxN and Qh5) +-.
* Scholar's mate
For the sake of sakeness (which is also why the last two are here) I should mention scholar's mate. 1. e4 e5, 2. Qh5 Nc6, 3. Bc4 threatening Qxf7#. If 3. ... g6 then 4. Qf3 threatening Qxf7#. If 4. ... Nf6 then 5. g4?! threatening 6. g5 and if the knight on f6 moves then, (you guessed it), Qxf7#. Of course, this is a rubbish opening but it is surprising how many people fall for this trap, especially on Internet chess servers.
These chess tricks make use of tactical motifs which occur in many other positions. As well as trying to integrate these specific tricks into your openings repertoire I recommend that you try to find similar lines in the openings you already play. You should remember however that if your opponent plays the correct lines you will probably not achieve more than equality. These are only tricks and traps; you can't force an advantage in chess if your opponent plays accurately.

Note that all mutterings should be judged so that they are only just audible to your opponent and not to anyone else. Also, the volume should be judged so as to make it look like you don't want them to catch what you say.
* The "Oh my goodness" strategy
The classic "Oh my goodness" ploy has been around forever. You can of course substitute your own expletive but be careful around children. The idea is that you play a move which appears terrible, e.g. leaving your queen where it can be captured. Then you utter something along the lines of "Oh drat". The idea is that your opponent will think that you have made a mistake and quickly take the piece. He will realise too late that taking the queen was a terrible mistake and that you now have a forced win. The "Oh my God Attack", (that's its real name, sorry), runs as follows. 1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bc4 Nd4. Then you say "Oh my goodness" or something similar. Your opponent plays 4. Nxe5 and then you calmly play 4. ... Qg5, and await his resignation. (On account of 5. Nxf7 Qxg2, 6. Rf1 Qxe4, 7. Be2 Nf3#).
* The bluff
If you play a really bad move it is usually a good idea to disguise it and not react when you see what is wrong with it. However, some people prefer to smile to themselves and even mutter "Aha, I've got you now". The idea is that the opponent will think that there is some reason why he should not exploit the mistake in the way he intended to and will play some other move. In a desperate position you might even play an inferior continuation and accompany it with "well, that was a narrow escape".
* The "it's so easy I don't even have to think about it" strategy
This is when you are in the middle of an attack against your opponent or he has sacrificed material in return for an attack against you. The strategy involves memorising the position and then standing up and walking away from the board to go and look out of the window. The idea is to make your opponent think that you are so sure of what will happen next that you no longer need to analyse. This is bound to worry him. The trick is to continue to think about the position while you are away from the board so that you don't lose any time. Be sure to look round every so often with a smug look on your face both to check that your opponent hasn't moved yet and to encourage the grain of doubt you have planted in his mind to flourish and grow.
* The other "it's so easy I don't even have to think about it" strategy
This is extremely risky but is sometimes worth a go against stronger opponents if you know that they have a tendency to get themselves into time trouble. Just play your moves very quickly. Choose moderately tactical continuations that you feel comfortable with. Try to steer the game into positions which are sufficiently complex to give your opponent something to think about, but not too complicated that you are likely to make serious mistakes playing quickly. Naturally, you still need to invest time 'blunder-checking' your moves before you play them.
* The distraction
This is highly immoral/unethical but is often effective. Bring something to the board with you that will distract your opponent. A flask of some hot drink or a packet of crisps are the usual choices but sometimes people bring mascots or CD players. Silly hats are my favourite. If you are female then you don't need to bring anything, just select appropriate attire.
* The intimidation strategy
The most effective form of intimidation involves talking loudly with a friend (before your games starts) about some Grandmaster game you saw the other week. Tell you friend, (loudly enough that your opponent can hear), that you have spent weeks studying it and that you and your personal trainer have come up with a novelty which you think wins by force. Make sure that you don't mention the opening or the name of either of the Grandmasters who played the game. Tell your friend that you tried the move on Fritz and won quickly. You might want to expand on this idea by having your friend say something like "well, the last time you sprung a novelty like that you crushed your opponent in less than half an hour".
* The offbeat opening strategy
As the name suggests, the idea here is to play a dodgy opening with the sole intention of gaining a psychological advantage over your opponent. The best offbeat openings for white are the Nimzo-Larsen attack which begins 1. b3, and the St George opening, which begins 1. b4. I know little about the former but have seen the latter on a number of occasions. A sample line runs 1. b4 e5, 2. a3 d5, 3. Bb2 Bd6, (of course not 3. ... Nc6? 4. b5 winning blacks e-pawn) 4. e3 Nf6, 5. c4 when the position is probably equal. However, white may have obtained a psychological edge in that his opponent may have the feeling that what white has done cannot be correct and that there must be some way of refuting the opening outright. There is not and so the player with the black pieces may become frustrated and overpress and will probably be behind on the clock.
Please don't try any of these psychological tricks in important games or against friends because such unsportsmanly behaviour just isn't cricket old boy.
